WHY WE LOVE bergamot
Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is a small citrus fruit best known for its beautifully fragrant peel. Grown most famously in Calabria in southern Italy, bergamot produces an essential oil traditionally obtained by pressing the peel of the fresh fruit.
Its aroma sits somewhere between citrus and floral — fresh, sparkling and slightly bitter, with soft green and aromatic undertones. Unlike the straightforward juiciness of lemon or orange, bergamot has an elegant complexity that has made it one of perfumery’s most loved citrus ingredients.
You may already know its distinctive aroma without realising it: bergamot is famously associated with the fragrance of Earl Grey tea.

Bergamot’s fresh, uplifting aroma has made its essential oil popular in aromatherapy, where it is often used to create a bright, calming atmosphere. Its combination of sparkling citrus and softer floral facets can feel simultaneously energising and soothing.
The essential oil contains naturally occurring aromatic compounds including limonene, linalyl acetate and linalool. Together, these contribute to bergamot’s distinctive balance of citrus freshness, floral softness and aromatic complexity.
Like several expressed citrus oils, traditional bergamot essential oil contains naturally occurring furanocoumarins that can cause photosensitivity when used on skin at inappropriate concentrations before UV exposure. For this reason, perfumery and cosmetic formulations must take appropriate safety standards into account, and FCF (furanocoumarin-free) bergamot oil is also available.

Bergamot is wonderfully versatile.
For a fresh, sparkling fragrance, we love pairing it with other citrus and aromatic materials such as Lemon, Mandarin, Grapefruit, Neroli, Petitgrain, Lavender and Rosemary. These combinations emphasise bergamot’s crisp, uplifting character.
With florals such as Rose, Jasmine, Ylang Ylang and Orange Blossom, bergamot brings brightness to the opening while allowing the softer floral notes to unfold underneath.
It also works beautifully against deeper materials. Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Patchouli, Amber and musks can all benefit from bergamot’s freshness, creating contrast between a bright opening and a warm, grounded drydown.
