Female Empowerment
This International Women’s Day, Perfume Playground won’t be standing in a protest or buying cellophane-wrapped flowers, and I doubt any of us will be wearing a feminist t-shirt (though I am eyeing up some fabulous ones I’ve seen online). What we will be doing, however, is more of the same. Continuing our heart-led approach and the values that we have always championed. Because if you believe deeply in a cause, you don’t shout about it once a year. You embody it to the extent that it can’t help but show up in your everyday actions. Why? Because when you truly believe in something – what other way is there?
Through the pillars of scent, soul and science, our core values are based on people and the planet. Everything we do, every workshop we create, honours these themes. But underpinning all of this is our empowerment of each other as colleagues, as friends and as women, and too of all the women (that’s you, dear reader) who have joined us along our scent journey.
If you’ve been following our behind the scenes series and getting to know us all, you’ll know the diverse, passionate, creative collective of women who make up Perfume Playground. Behind all we do to bring you the latest in perfumery and the science of scent, we also have personal hopes, dreams and passions unique to our DNA and our individual experiences in this world. Astrid is pursuing her Masters, Rabia is penning a novel, Maggie our environmentalist!
And then there’s Samantha, who grew our business from the ground up. A time creased photo of her sat at a desk in her garage with a basic computer set-up and a beaming smile is one that fills us all with pride. To look at this photo, one can’t help but recognise someone who is following their truest path. To get to where she is now, we understand the hard work and dedication required. When the camera button was clicked she was someone who believed in herself, even if at that point, others couldn’t see the journey that lay ahead. Samantha and every one of her team has, at some moment in time, experienced challenges – whether driven by unjust assumptions or gender bias. But we stand empowered by each other, by the passion we have for our work and by all the women who come through our doors, looking for more. Whether that ‘more’ is fun, connection, knowledge or creativity.
